António Saura

Born in Miranda do Douro, he studied filmmaking in Madrid, becoming one of the most successful directors of his generation. In 1998, he premiered his first feature film, “A Sombra dos Abutres”, as well as “Zona J”, the highest grossing Portuguese film that year. In 1998, he also made his debut on television with the successful although controversial mini-series “Ballet Rose Vidas Proibidas”.

Highlights of his career have included the 2002 film, “A Selva”, filmed in the Amazon jungle, a Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian co-production; “Um Tiro no Escuro”, from 2003; and “Arte de Roubar, Uma Comédia Negra de Acção”, a co-production between Portugal, Brazil and Spain, sold to more than 20 countries. In 2010, he directed “Conexão”, for RTP, TV Galicia and TV3 de Barcelona, two TV films on drug-trafficking in the north of Spain, considered the best television series in 2010 by the Academia Galega do Audiovisual (Spain) and nominated for best European mini-series for FIPA 2010 in Biarritz (France).

Through his production company Stopline Films, Leonel Vieira is also one of the most in-demand directors in the advertising market in Portugal. He is currently preparing the following feature films: “O Último Animal” (a co-production with Brazil and Spain) and the romantic comedy “Mulheres”.
